A passion for beautiful and functional craft that can be used to access remote places and enjoy nature, is at the heart of the Canvas Canoes ethos.
Since 2006, Steven has been combining wilderness travel and bushcraft with his love for traditional carpentry. He is an experienced wilderness educator, having taught wilderness skills at home and abroad for over 15 years. He's led remote expeditions to the subarctic, jungle and desert and has spent time living with indigenous people for whom crafting is a way of life. Steven co-presents 'Bushcraft with Ed Stafford & Steven Hanton' - a Comprehensive Online Bushcraft course.
Given his other commitments as an educator, he only builds a small number of canoes. This, however, ensures he can take the time to make sure that every detail of the canoe is given his full attention.
In addition to building the finest wooden canoes and paddles, Steven regularly offers consultancy in wilderness skills and canoeing lore.
Steven has been the subject of various canoe articles and has supplied canoes and consultancy to several production companies for TV and Film.
